County Official Again Offers Free Rides to New Year's Eve Revellers
FairHaven pledges support to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, who takes a stand against the perils of drinking and driving with a program to drive people to and from parties at no charge.
It's been said that there's no such thing as a free ride, and that happens to be a fact.
This year FairHaven Funeral Home has pledged its support to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, who makes sure that anyone who wants a ride to or from a New Year's Eve party in Macon can get one -- at no cost.
Jones has provided this important service for a number of years, but few realized that he was paying for it out of his own pocket. The elected official has always felt it important to give back to the community.
"Obviously, we've worked with Leon and have followed this initiative for some time," said Brittany Rewis Kalejta, a funeral director with FairHaven Funeral Home. "Running three 15-passenger vans all night long is bound to rack up some considerable fuel bills."
The leadership at FairHaven admired what Jones was doing and wanted to make sure that the popular program would continue without adversely affecting Jones or the beneficiaries.
"The message and the service is just too important to be shouldered financially by one individual," Kalejta said. "We thought it was an opportune time to step up and help in that respect."
If you or someone you know is on the move on New Year's Eve and is expecting to celebrate with alcohol, we encourage you to call (478) 256-6716 to reserve your ride.
The vans will start picking people up at 5 PM and will stop when everyone is home and safe.
