Velta Johnson

Velta Lydia Johnson, 95, of Macon, joined her Lord and Savior, Monday, November 27, 2017. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Porterfield Baptist Church; the family will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Immediately following the service, Ms. Johnson will be laid to rest in New Elim Baptist Church Cemetery. Reverend Sam Waldron will officiate.
Ms. Johnson was a lifelong resident of Macon, living on Hartley Bridge Road until 1996, and then moved to Francis Drive. She lived and cared for her mother all of her life. She attended John H. Heard School, Lanier Jr. High School for girls and was a graduate of A.L. Miller High School. At the age of 16 she started teaching children in Sunday school. In 1954, Ms. Johnson was a charter member of Porterfield Baptist Church where she was extremely involved in church activities; she taught Children's Sunday School, also sang in the choir, was active with the Woman's Missionary Union, Training Union and Royal Ambassadors and she taught Sunday School at a local nursing home. She retired from Robins Air Base, after 37 years of faithful service. After retirement she became president of the Woman's Missionary Union and they named their group after her during that time. In 1980 that she began a new venture and started teaching adults in Sunday school and Training Union. Ms. Johnson had a kind and giving heart and worked as a volunteer for many years at the Macon Baptist Ministry Center.
Ms. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph and Edna Gentry Johnson; as well as her brother: Joseph Edwin Johnson.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving sister; Ruth Johnson Parrish and several nieces and nephews.
