Shirley Louise MaGouirk Mayo, 89, of Macon, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be held on Monday, March 25, at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of FairHaven Funeral Home. Immediately following, Ms. Mayo will be laid to rest in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. The family will greet friends one hour prior to service time.
Ms. Mayo was born on September 22, 1934, in Fairfax, Alabama, to the late Mr. Jesse Enoch MaGouirk and Mrs. Permillie Odessa Spraggins MaGouirk. She retired from Macon Water Authority, where she was an accountant. Ms. Mayo was a strong, independent, deeply devoted family oriented, southern lady, who loved immensely and did everything for everyone. In her free time, she loved to travel, taking trips to the beach and Niagara Falls. Not to be outdone by anyone, she was handy, repairing her own roof and making her own clothes by the time she was 12. Ms. Mayo will be missed most by those that called her Mama and Granny.
In addition to her parents, Ms. Mayo was preceded in death by her grandson, Michael Matthews; sisters, Gloria Brooks and Faye Gledhill; and brother, Thomas MaGouirk.
Left to cherish Ms. Mayo's memory are her daughter, Wanda Matthews; sons, Jesse Mayo and Stephen Wes Mayo; grandchildren, Sherri (Mark) Mayo, Stacy Matthews, Jessica Matthews, and Brittany (Brian) Mayo Chesnut; great-grandchildren, Danyelle (Melissa) Harris, Gregory (Jennifer) Lazenby, Blaine Porter, Brianna Porter, Audrie (Pete) Galeazzo, Janzlee (Kyle) Johns, Kaylen Preston, Leia Williams, and Alex (Taylor) Williams; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
