Robert Mitchell Pope, 93, of Macon, passed away on Wednesday, January 5, 2022. A celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, January 11, at 2:00 PM at Gateway Fellowship Church of God with Pastor Eddie Shumate officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to service time. Entombment will be private.
Mr. Pope was born December 10, 1928, in Tifton, Georgia, son of the late Henry Lawson Pope and Betsy Walker Pope. He was a loving father and has been happily married to, and is survived by the love of his life, Mary Nell Goff Pope. They celebrated their 72 anniversary on August 20, 2021.
After years of farming as a young man, Mr. Pope moved to Macon, working at and retired from Swift Meat Packing Company, while serving as a TV repair technician on the side. He owned rental property, worked as a body shop manager, the Post Office, Rainbow Vacuum, finally ending his career at the age of 90 to stay home with his bride. Prior to his retirement from Swift, he'd leave work in the afternoons to go work in his ½ acre plus garden which he took great pride in. He did this many years and had amazing harvests which brought him great joy.
Mr. Pope was a member of Stone Edge Assembly of God, yet his life portrayed much more than church membership. He led by example as he walked with God throughout his adult life after being "born again" as a young man. His children, grandchildren, and those that knew him were taught by his example of what the life of a true Christian should be. Today he's reaping great rewards in his mansion as he awaits the love of his life.
Mr. Pope's first child, Robert Wayne Pope, died at 2 days old; however, due to the mercy of God he is survived by his remaining children: Jerry Glynn Pope (Deb), Bobbie Jean Whittle (Herschel), James Ronald Pope (Melba), Janet Teresa Eddy, and Angela Lynn Hogg (Shawn). Grandchildren include, Jarrod Persons, Corey Pope (Monica), Paula Roberts, Herschel Whittle, Jr., Tess Pate (Mic), Angel McCall (James), Crystal Higdon, Tyler Pope, Courtney Hester (Joe), Ashley Eddy, Cassidy Hamlin (Justin), Lance Foster (Linda), and Katie Waits. He is
