Robert Morgan "Bobby" Gordon, affectionately known as "Coach," passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on April 22, 1948, in Macon, Georgia, Bobby was the beloved son of the late George Hobson and Janie Lee Sauls Gordon.
A proud graduate of Northside High School's Class of 1967, where he was voted "Most Friendly" and remained so throughout his life. Bobby attended Carson-Newman College on a football scholarship, and was committed to the team's success and made lasting friendships with other squad members. He graduated in 1972 with a degree in health and physical education.
He answered the call to serve his country with honor in the United States Navy. As a young recruit and ever the team player, he was adamant that all of his fellow recruits at flight training school make the cut.
He devoted over 25 years of his life to shaping young lives as a high school coach at Southwest, Southeast and Rutland in Macon and Northside in Warner Robins, mentoring students in football, wrestling, golf, track, and swimming. Known for his larger than life, ever-encouraging, spirit-filled love, dedication, and wisdom, Coach Gordon was a pillar of strength, kindness, and inspiration to generations of athletes, often offering his time, love and resources. As Manager of the Macon Health Club in the 1980s, he built a thriving program and forged unbreakable friendships with members and residents. He and Miona partnered in Southern Behavioral Services and he supported us in untold ways. He was a faithful member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Macon, where his deep faith guided his life and relationships. For the past decade, Bobby found great joy in designing and building his cherished lake house—a place of peace, gathering and legacy for his family and friends.
He was married for 41 loving years to his wife, Miona Chancellor Gordon, with whom he built a life filled with laughter, deep love and shared values. They were each other's pillars. His love for his children knew no end.
Bobby treasured his time with loved ones, especially his beloved children and grandchildren, to whom he was their Papa. He and his faithful best friend, four-legged Belgian Malinois companion, Sally, were well-known and loved throughout South Macon for the past six years.
Bobby loved life, music and dance. He never met a stranger and was known for his warmth, infectious smile, and unforgettable storytelling. His legacy lives on in every life he touched.
