Captain, Richard Allen Powers, Sr., 84, of Macon, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2026, just 36 hours after his beautiful wife of 66 years, Sarah Eugenia Etheredge Powers. A celebration of their lives will be held on Tuesday, May 26, at 12:00 PM in the chapel of FairHaven Funeral Home with Pastor, Don Barber officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to service time.
Richard’s life was defined by faith, service, love, and an unwavering commitment to the people around him. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and follower of Christ, he spent his life putting others before himself and leaving a lasting impact on every person fortunate enough to know him.
Richard began learning the value of hard work at an early age, helping his father with the family piano business by delivering pianos. Those early years shaped the work ethic and servant’s heart that would define the rest of his life.
In 1961, Richard answered a calling to serve his community when he joined the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department. Over the course of more than 36 years, he faithfully served and rose to the rank of Captain before retiring. Even retirement could not keep him from serving others. After moving to Rabun County, he continued his dedication to helping those around him by volunteering with the Rabun County Fire Department.
Richard worked tirelessly throughout his life to provide for his family, making sacrifices to ensure his children received a private school education and every opportunity possible. He loved his family deeply and found great joy in watching them grow through each generation.
Beyond his work and service, Richard enjoyed life’s simple pleasures. He was an avid golfer, a devoted NASCAR fan, and a passionate Georgia Bulldogs supporter who never missed the opportunity to cheer on his beloved Dawgs.
Richard and his beautiful wife, Sarah, made their home in the mountains of Rabun County, where together they created one of the most meaningful parts of their legacy. They founded Richard’s Kids, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing joy and hope to underprivileged children at Christmas. Through the organization, they helped serve more than 10,000 children and raised over one million dollars over the past 30 years to provide toys, clothing, and necessities to families in need. Richard believed every child deserved to feel loved, seen, and cared for.
Throughout his life, Richard poured himself into serving others through his church, his community, and his everyday acts of kindness. He never sought recognition; he simply lived out his faith by loving people well.
Later in life, Richard and Sarah returned to Central Georgia so he could enjoy one of his greatest blessings — watching his great-grandchildren grow up and creating precious memories with them.
Richard’s legacy is not measured by titles, accomplishments, or years served, though they were many. It is measured by the countless lives he touched, the love he gave freely, and the example of Christ-like kindness he showed every day. His life was truly a life spent serving others, and his impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and joyfully remembered.
In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by her daughter, Leslie Heather Powers Miller; siblings, Trudy Pierce, Barbara Powers, Cliff Powers, and Bob Powers.
Left to cherish Richard’s memory are her children, Kimberly Powers, Richard A. Powers, Jr., (Tami), and Josh Powers (Miranda); grandchildren, Jake Newberry (Gabby), Leighann Newberry (Amanda), Haley Powers (Caitlyn), and Cole Miller; great-grandchildren, Gracie, Autumn, Asher, Gunner, Noah, Jax, and Lilly.
In lieu of flowers, the family graciously requests donations be made in Richard’s honor to: Richards Kids at www.richardskids.org
