Peyton Taylor Pitts, III., of Macon GA, passed away the morning of Wednesday, June 30. He was surrounded by loving family, friends, and nurses until his passing, and he will be missed by many. He is survived by three stepdaughters and four grandchildren. In his youth, he worked in construction, but disability kept him from making much of a career. To know Peyton was to love him - he was always helping someone, though he could barely walk. He rode his mower on his "good days" to help friends and neighbors keep their yards maintained, and he did this for free sometimes or for little cost to keep up the mower. He would fix anything that he could.
Peyton was a loving husband, "VIP - Very Important Pop", "PawPaw", and best friend to many neighbors including Shannon Smith and her grandson, "JJ". He loved to grill "party wings", go fishing, mow yards, fix things, and care for his various pets including fish, birds, cats, dogs, chickens and guineas, and even a pig at one point! Growing up in Conroe, TX, his favorite pet was the family horse, "Dundee". Peyton was a cowboy at heart and loved horses, cowboy boots, cowboy belt buckles, cowboy hats, Westerns, and country music.
After his wife's passing, Peyton's best companions were his dogs, Stewie and Sampson. Peyton was especially close to his stepdaughter Theresa Abercrombie, who helped care for him since her mother passed away. Grandkids Kelly and Colton ("CJ") and his neighbor's grandson "JJ" were his pride and joy! Neighbor, Shannon Smith checked in on Peyton daily to help him and provide home cooked meals - and to her, the family is eternally grateful.
Peyton was preceded in death by his parents, Peyton Taylor Pitts, Jr., and Joyce (Cheatham), and finally by his wife, Mary (Davis) Pitts, who passed away two years and one day before him. Peyton will be laid to rest beside Mary at Rose Hill Cemetery following a Memorial Service at Fairhaven Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 6. The visitation with family will precede the service at 10 a.m. at Fairhaven Funeral Home.
Peyton was so much to so many of us, and he will be sorely missed for his good humor, friendship, kindness and compassion. Prayers for comfort are appreciated in lieu of flowers.
