Leon Oswald Staines, "Red," 89, of Byron, passed away on Thursday, September 25, 2025. The family will have a time of visitation on Sunday, September 28, starting at 1:00 PM at Byron Baptist Church, with a service to honor his life starting 2:00 PM. Pastor, Bill Barnes, Pastor, Keith Patterson, and Pastor, Zeke DeLaFuente will officiate and Corey Jernigan, Mr. Staines grandson, will honor his grandfather in music. Immediately, following Mr. Staines will be laid to rest at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Staines was born on September 9, 1936, in Cordele, Georgia, to the late Mr. Leon "Lyn" Staines and Mrs. Myrtle Johnson Staines. He retired after many years of service from, Armstrong World Industries where he worked in shipping. Mr. Staines was a devoted member of Byron Baptist Church for over 50 years, where he faithfully served as a Deacon and shared his heart for the Lord as a Sunday School teacher. His life was marked by a deep calling to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ, a mission he embraced not only through teaching but also through his gift of music. He found great joy in lifting his voice in praise, traveling and singing with several well-known Gospel groups throughout the years. Among those Mr. Staines sang with were the Georgia Echoes, Lemar Siego, the Samaritans, the Dixie Travelers, and One Voice. Through his service, both in the church and through music ministry, Mr. Staines touched countless lives with the message of God's love and grace.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Staines was preceded in death by his siblings, George Staines, Julius Staines, Joanne Staines, and Elouise Staines.
Left to cherish Mr. Staines memory are his loving wife of 64 years, Shirley "Janet" Staines, children, Bambie (Jonathan) James, Tammie (Mike) Knowles, Tabitha Barnes, Mandy (James) Irvin, Samantha (Casey) Joyner, and Randy Staines; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, brother, Kenneth (Anne) Staines, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to give a special heartfelt thank you to, Family Hospice, their church family at Byron Baptist, and Mr. Staines wonderful caregiver, Amy Powers.
