John Rhys Jones, 76, of Macon, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Born on Thursday, April 6, 1950, in New London, Connecticut, Rhys was the son of the late John Francis Jones and Lillie Goldsborough Jones. He was a man of quiet strength, steadfast character, and many varied interests who touched the lives of those around him in meaningful ways.
Rhys devoted much of his professional life to caring for others as a Registered Nurse. He retired from Coliseum Medical Center in Macon, Georgia, where his compassion, dedication, and commitment to helping others made a lasting difference. Nursing was more than simply a career for Rhys; it reflected his genuine desire to serve and contribute to the well-being of others.
Beyond his professional life, Rhys believed strongly in giving back to his community. He generously contributed his time and resources to a wide variety of charitable causes, particularly those benefiting children, Georgia State Parks, and Sheriff’s Department charities. His generosity was a reflection of his belief that one could make a difference not only through words, but through action.
Rhys was a true outdoorsman who found enjoyment and a sense of peace in hiking and birdwatching. He appreciated the beauty of nature and the opportunity to explore the outdoors. He was also a gun enthusiast, a history buff, and a devoted weightlifter. His interests were as diverse as his personality, and he possessed a natural curiosity that kept him continually learning and exploring.
A musician at heart, Rhys appreciated the power of music and the way it could bring people together. He was also known for his stoic nature, approaching life with determination, thoughtfulness, and quiet resolve. Those who knew him will also remember his sharp mind and remarkable ability to solve crossword puzzles. He was truly a master of them, taking great pleasure in the challenge of finding just the right word.
Above all, Rhys will be remembered for the unique person he was—intelligent, independent, generous, and quietly devoted to the causes and interests that mattered to him. His life was one marked by service, curiosity, perseverance, and a genuine appreciation for the world around him.
In addition to his parents, Rhys was preceded in death by his beloved spouse, Elizabeth Jones.
