James "Jim" Newton Jones, age 84, of Bonaire, Georgia died Monday, March 25, 2024.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 8, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Warner Robins. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeff Cook and the Rev. Justin McLaughlin. Visitation is from 1 to 2 p.m.
Mr. Jones was born June 25, 1939 to Paul and Lois Jones of Howard, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ann Jones, his sister, Frances Childree and an infant brother, Walter Hugh Jones.
He was a 1958 graduate of Butler High School in Butler, Georgia.
He worked at Flint Energies as a young man and at the University of Georgia Computer Center for five years before going into business for himself. He was a florist and opened his first flower shop, April Flowers, in Forsyth, Georgia in 1972. He later owned and operated shops in Montezuma, Fort Valley and Butler. He told a reporter in one interview about his business: "This is really God's shop; I'm just the shop keeper." He also enjoyed growing flowers.
He was active in Second Baptist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church in Warner Robins. He participated actively in church during his lifetime, serving as a steward in a Methodist Church and as a deacon in a Baptist Church. For many years, he taught Junior Boys Sunday School classes.
Survivors are his daughter, April Joseph and husband, Michael Joseph, Sr., of Forsyth; two grandchildren, Michael Joseph, Jr., and Daniel Joseph of Forsyth; two nieces, Joyce Hamlin of Warner Robins, and Shirley Smith of Lizella, Georgia,, and one nephew, Richard Childree of Houston, Texas.
