James "Jim" Nathan Harden

May 4, 1939 — May 5, 2026

Byron

James Nathan “Jim” Harden, 87, of Byron, Georgia, passed peacefully at home on May 5, 2026, just one day after celebrating his birthday surrounded by the legacy of a life well lived. Born on May 4, 1939, in Macon, Georgia, Jim lived with steady purpose, deep faith, and an enduring love for family, community, and the land.

Jim was the beloved husband of the late Doris Jean “Dee” Hunt Harden, with whom he shared 54 devoted years. Their love story began unexpectedly at a skating rink during his service in the United States Marines—a chance meeting that grew into a lifetime of partnership, laughter, and unwavering support. Together, they built a home rooted in faith and family after returning to Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lillian Harden, and his sister, Mary Brown.

Jim is lovingly remembered by his daughters, Derita (Ben) Puckett and Kristi (Sam) Hightower, who carry forward his values of kindness, dedication, and faith. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Reed (Kelly) Puckett, Nathan (Leah) Puckett, Jarrett Johnson, and Emily Bowden (fiancé Zach Osbolt), and his great-grandchildren, Palmer and Bennett Puckett, who brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Sandra Hunt; his niece, Heather Hunt and her son Kaden; his nephew, Rev. John (Toni) Brown; and his niece, Carolyn (Larry) Liebau.

A proud graduate of Lanier High School, Jim briefly attended Mercer University with the intention of entering the seminary before answering the call to serve his country in the United States Marines. That same sense of duty and commitment defined his civilian life as well.

Jim dedicated over 30 years of service to the United States Postal Service, retiring at the age of 52. Retirement, however, was not a slowing down—it was the beginning of a dream fulfilled. He turned wholeheartedly to farming, raising cattle and cutting hay, finding joy in the rhythm of the land. One of his proudest moments was purchasing his dream vehicle—a John Deere tractor with an enclosed cab and air conditioning—a symbol of both hard work and reward.

A pillar of the Byron community, Jim was a faithful member of the Byron Lions Club for 45 years. He was perhaps best known for his role in organizing the annual turkey shoot each Saturday leading up to Thanksgiving, as well as his involvement in the beloved pancake breakfast each March. Whether serving in leadership or as the club’s spirited “tale twister,” he brought humor, dedication, and heart to every gathering.

Above all, Jim was a man of deep and abiding faith. A lifelong member of Wesley United Methodist Church, he served in nearly every role imaginable—Youth Leader, Lay Leader, committee chair, Boy Scout liaison—but perhaps his most remarkable contribution was teaching Sunday School for 67 years. Generations were shaped by his guidance, his steady presence, and his love for Scripture. He loved his church, its people, and above all, he loved Jesus.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care, especially his niece Heather, along with Candace, Miranda, Joe, Jasmine, Andrew, and Chad, whose kindness brought comfort in his final days.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Monday, May 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church in Macon, Georgia. Visitation will take place at the church beginning two hours prior to the service. Burial will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. Pastor Josh Gale and Rev. John Brown will officiate.
