James Leonard Barlow, 74, of Macon, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. A Graveside Service to Celebrate his Life will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, May 22, 2026, at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born January 17, 1952, in Macon, James was a lifelong resident who carried a deep love for his hometown, his faith, and his friends throughout his life. A man of remarkable intelligence and quiet wisdom, James was known by those who loved him as an easygoing and thoughtful soul whose kindness and knowledge left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
James loved the Lord and lived his life with humility, grace, and compassion. Education was one of the great passions of his life. He graduated from Mark Smith High School for Boys in 1970 before continuing his studies at Georgia College & State University, where he earned his degree in 1974. He later went on to earn a Master’s Degree from University of Tennessee.
Using his love of learning and history, James dedicated many years of his life to educating young minds as a middle school history teacher. He later continued his professional career working as a Title Abstractor, where his attention to detail and vast knowledge served him well.
James was a true scholar at heart. He had a tremendous love for books and maintained an extensive personal library that reflected his endless curiosity and appreciation for knowledge. He especially enjoyed studying Georgia history, the history of the Old South, and the life and presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. His passion for history was not only something he taught but something he genuinely lived and shared with others.
Outside of academics, James enjoyed college sports, particularly basketball and football, and could often be found cheering on his favorite teams while enjoying conversations about the games he loved. Though highly intelligent and accomplished, he remained gentle, approachable, and easygoing in spirit.
Left to cherish his memory are lifelong friends Jackie and MV Jr. Bostick.
James Leonard Barlow will be remembered for his brilliant mind, his love of history and learning, his devotion to the Lord, and the quiet kindness he extended to all who knew him. His memory will forever remain treasured by his many dear friends and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
