Greta Perkins Vinson, 91, passed away peacefully in her home on November 10th, surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 65 years, Reverend Robert P. Vinson. She is survived by her two daughters, Marilyn Vinson Raffield (Melvin) and Miriam Vinson Cook (Richard), along with six grandchildren: Melissa Jones Smith (Mark), Mandy Scarbary (Dave Chow), Miranda Jones Ayers (Chan), Shay Williams (Mandy), Meredith Cook Stokes (Richard), and Robbie Williams. She was also cherished by 14 great-grandchildren: McKenzie Smith Ligeikis (Alex), McClane Smith, Maycie Smith, Dean Chow, Quinn Chow, Lin Chow, Garrett Ayers (Nicolette), Madison Ayers Humphreys (George), Mollee Ayers (Konner Hodges), Micah Williams, Cassadie Williams, Hannah Williams, Rylan Stokes, and Baxton Williams. She was the proud daughter of Leonard and Quinelle Trull Perkins, and sister to Dorothy Ann Parrish, Melba Stephens, Joyce Quick, and Eddie Perkins.

Greta was deeply loved and supported in her later years by her dedicated caregivers: Lisa Kendrick, Joyce Brown, Barbara Smith, and Josephine Holt, whose care and compassion were a great comfort to her and her family.

Born in Wayne County, Georgia on October 11, 1933, Greta dedicated her life to education. A lifelong educator and passionate advocate for literacy, she made a lasting impact on countless students throughout her career. She began as a classroom teacher at Joseph N. Neal Elementary School, where she instilled a love of reading in generations of children. Greta later served as the Language Arts Curriculum Director in the Bibb County School System and also taught as an adjunct professor of Education at Mercer University in Macon, GA. After retiring, she continued to serve the education community as a consultant for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

An active leader in her field, Greta was a past state president of the International Reading Association. She was also deeply involved in her faith community, serving as a Sunday School teacher in several churches in the middle Georgia area. Her colleagues, students, and all who knew her will remember her not only for her professional accomplishments but for her unwavering belief that reading is the foundation of all learning.

Greta's legacy extends far beyond her career. She was a woman of deep faith, boundless generosity, and had a true servant's heart. Her family and friends will forever remember her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend- a woman who valued hard work, and who inspired all who crossed her path to read, learn, and grow.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the caregivers, family, and friends who supported Greta throughout her life and in her final years. A service to celebrate her life will be held at Fairhaven Funeral Home on Thursday, November 14th. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m.
