Frances Louise Sheppard Scales, age 92, of Macon, Georgia, passed away November 13, 2024.
Born in Atlanta on January 29, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Mary Bostwick Sheppard. In 1951 she married her sweetheart, Forest Green Scales, Jr. and they celebrated 63 years of marriage until his death in 2014. Family was very important to Frances and she loved hers with all of her heart.
Frances received her bachelor's degree from Georgia State College and began her teaching career in Atlanta. She loved children and teaching and went on to teach in some way nearly her whole life. She taught at the First Presbyterian Day School in Macon and the Buford City Schools where she was Teacher of the Year for the school system in 1985. She received her master's degree from Mercer University. After her retirement, Frances went on to work at the Academy of Innovation and Ava White Tutorials in Gainesville. Throughout the years she tutored children privately and taught art lessons in her home.
Along with her sister, Mary Claire and her brother-in-law, John Lines, Frances and Forest owned a cabin at Lake Winfield Scott, near Suches. Many wonderful family times were enjoyed there. The Scales family fell in love with the mountains and after many years of living in Macon, they bought a home in Suches where they lived for several years. Later they lived in the old Scales home place in Lula, where Forest was born, and then in Baldwin, Georgia. In 2014, Frances and Forest returned to Macon to live at Antebellum on Arlington Assisted Living Center.
Frances was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Forest was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). They both loved history and greatly enjoyed the activities with their chapters.
A curious person with a passion for learning, Frances had a love for animals (particularly dogs and horses), music, and art. She was a choir member at First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville and enjoyed sharing her talent for playing the flute with the congregation. Her green thumb was evident by the beautiful plants that she grew in her home.
Frances was predeceased by her loving husband, Forest, her dear son, Paul Elliot Scales, and her sister, Mary Claire Sheppard Lines. She is survived by her dear daughters Claire Dunn (Tim) of Knoxville, Georgia and Charlotte Scales of Toccoa, Georgia; her granddaughters Rebekah Sessions Miller (Mitch), Mary C. Scales, Emily Scales Dill, Lindsay Sessions Mendoza (Alex), Piper Dunn; eight great-grandchildren and devoted niece Mary Ann Lines Holloway.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Her ashes will be inurned next to her beloved husband in the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium in Gainesville.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
