What is a life well-lived if not filled with humble service and an abundance of love? These two markers of a truly fulfilling life will always be remembered by those who loved Don best.
Donald "Don" Gene Crawford, 73, of Lizella, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, on Friday, July 21, 2023. A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, July 27, at 2:00 PM at Lizella Baptist Church with the Reverend, Chris Minton, officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to service time.
Don was born on June 19, 1950, in Fitzgerald, Georgia, to the late Mr. Saint Elmer Crawford and Mrs. Myrtle Idella McGuire Crawford. Don retired from Southern Company, after 42 years of service, where he was an IT Tech. Don met his beautiful and devoted wife, Mary Ellen, in Fitzgerald, GA. After dating for several months, Don knew she was the one for him. Never the one for overly romantic gestures, he took her on a date to Pizza Hut and got right to the point as he slid over her ring and proudly declared, "Here's your ring! Let's get married!" They were happily married on December 20, 1974. In 1992, their greatest dream was realized as they held their only child, Becky, for the first time. Don's greatest joy came from being a father and would tell anyone he met that his daughter was his proudest and greatest accomplishment in his life. Don was best known for his strong work ethic, his dry and witty humor, and his generosity. He made every waitress he ever had laugh, quietly met the needs of friends and strangers, and selflessly sacrificed to ensure his family was cared for to the fullest. His legacy will continue on through his wife, daughter, and countless loved ones, as they cherish the many simple moments that they shared with Don that have now become precious memories.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Elmer and Myrtle Crawford.
Left to cherish Don's memory is his loving wife of 48 years, Mary Ellen Grimes Crawford; daughter and son-in-law Becky and Greg Pirkle; grandson Matthew Pirkle; sister Carol McCard; niece Sandi Thompson (Mike); and several great nieces and nephews.
So, what is a life well-lived if not filled with humble service and an abundance of love? We who loved Don would not know as he filled each moment of our time together with them.
