Dr. Charlotte Corinn Thames Cox VanHoozier, of Macon, was called home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 8, 2025, after 84 years of God's faithfulness in her life.
The widow of pastors Rev. John Cox, and Brother Don VanHoozier, is survived by her 16 nieces and nephews and their children, High Point Church family, loving neighbors, friends and her beloved dogs, Zoey, 18, and Peachy, 4. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters.
A Celebration of her Life will be held Sat. July 12 at 3 p.m. with Pastor Trey Dickerson officiating at High Point, 2963 Hollis Road, Macon, Ga. 31206.
Charlotte was born Jan. 25, 1941, in Byron, Ga., to the late W.L. and Eunice Thames. The youngest of 5 children was baptized at Vacation Bible School at age 8 and couldn't get enough of reading the Bible. The Valedictorian of Fort Valley High School began studying biology and chemistry at the Women's College of Georgia before her pastor encouraged her to become a doctor. In 1963, she enrolled with three other women and 96 males at the Medical College of Georgia and graduated in 1967. She was Grady Hospital's first female accepted into the residency program and received a standing ovation upon completion of her training in Atlanta. She credits the love of John Cox for supporting her through lonely years of study, and the pressure of pioneering an OB/GYN solo practice in Macon. After John was diagnosed with cancer, Charlotte nursed him at home until his death. In the late 80s, she took early retirement and closed her practice to devote all her time and energy to Bro. Don's ministry of more than 50 years. Although she never had children of her own, she delivered hundreds of babies and served as a spiritual mother to countless people. "Grammie," as she was known to loved ones and the late A.C. Pup animal welfare mascot, loved dogs and birds and cared for many in her home. She was a fierce prayer warrior with continuously growing lists of causes and concerns of others. Her dedication to the Body of Christ was outstanding with hand-written cards, calls, lunch dates and gifts. In recent years while her strength waned and aches pained, she remained mentally sharp and able to care for herself at home, another answered prayer. In recent weeks after doctors discovered heart and lung issues, she cast her cares on the Lord. "I want Dr. Jesus," she said, and He was faithful to breathe everlasting life into her spirit.
