Cecil Raymond "Ray" Sandefur has seen the fulfillment of his life's verse, Philippians 1:21, "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain."
He was born in Crawford County, Georgia to John J. Sandefur and Vara Lou Reeves Sandefur on July 20, 1940. He was the youngest of eleven children. He attended school in Roberta, graduating from Crawford County High School in 1959. He retired from Graphic Packaging (Georgia Kraft) after 49 years of service.
He was a member of Mikado Baptist Church having served in many areas of ministry including driving a church van for Sunday School and AWANA, being a counselor and teacher in the Reformer's Unanimous program, serving in the local Jail Ministry through Mikado Baptist Church and the State Jail Ministry through the Bill Bright Prison ministry. While serving in the Bill Bright Prison Ministry with Pastor George Palmer, they both received a cross made of prison bars for their service. He was active for many years in the Child Evangelism Fellowship ministry. His passion was witnessing for his Savior and leading a soul to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. He spent countless hours discipling men in God's Word. He authored a book for this purpose entitled "The Truth of Who God Is." It was published in 2016.
He was a very artistic man, having painted many oil paintings for family and friends.
He loved nature and was blessed with a green thumb. He enjoyed building feeders and houses for birds and ducks. He faithfully fed the birds that flocked to our feeders. He loved his family and cherished times he could spend with them. He prayed every day for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren to come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. Many have.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy McGrotha Sandefur; three daughters, Varalyn Gay Hollar (Rick), Susan Belle Holley (Greg), and Janet Sandefur Finison; four siblings, Annie Mae Slade, Eunice Tatum, Vivian Phillips, David Sandefur; and many nieces and nephews. His grandchildren are Jason Mauldin, Jennifer Holley Crenshaw, Joshua Mauldin, Kristin Mauldin Schmidt, Jonathan Langford, Amanda Holley, Timothy Langford, Matthew Langford, and Laura Langford.
