Albert Sundell, 99, died Thursday, February 23, 2023, at his residence. Chapel Services will be held at 11:00 AM at Georgia Veterans Memorial Gardens, Milledgeville, with Chaplain, Darrell Carter officiating. The family graciously request in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to: VFW Post 658, 4864 Harrison Road, Macon, Georgia 31206 relief fund or to: Michigan Animal Rescue League, 790 Featherstone Street, Pontiac, Michigan 48342-1722.

Albert Sundell was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Elmira Pickard Sundell. He was the son of the late Emil Sundell, originally from Obo, Finland, and Edith Anne Beiley Sundell, originally from England. Albert was born in Port Arthur, Canada, moving to the USA when he was four months old. He lived in Rochester Hills before moving to Macon to be with his daughter. Albert was a member of Embury Methodist Church in Birmingham, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Dorothy, Grace, Molly; his brothers, Joseph, Henry; and the hundreds of animals that he, Mira and Sandy cared for over the past 80 plus years while living in Michigan and then here in Georgia.

Sergeant Albert Sundell attended basic training at Camp Davis, North Carolina, in May 1941, to December 1941. He then served at Langley Field, Virginia and Fort Dix, New Jersey, before departing for the Pacific theater for World War II from Boston, Massachusetts on the Queen Mary on February 18, 1942, to Sidney, Australia. From there he traveled to Brisbane, Australia, to set up 50 caliber machine gun positions on river near the US Sub Tender in Cooktown, Australia. In 1943, Sergeant Sundell departed to New Guinea. While on New Britain Island, he received Half Tracks with quad 50 caliber machine guns. In 1945, Sergeant Sundell was part of the invasion of the Philippines at Lingayen Gulf, moving across the island until April 1945. He was then sent back to the United States and discharged from the Army. January 23, 1946, Albert re-enlisted back in the Army and served as a recruiter in Royal Oaks, Michigan, until January 1949. He then worked as an animal control officer for the city of Birmingham, Michigan and deputy sheriff for Oakland County, Michigan, for the next 40 years.

Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Pounds (Lamar) of Macon; granddaughters, Tracy Spader (George) of Lambertville, Michigan, and Sherry Kummer (Dennis) of Chesterfield Township, Michigan; great-grandchildren, Brandon Spader, Erin Spader, Christine Spader, Jennifer Spader, and Dennis Kummer; and great-great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Darcy and Stella.
